Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has commended former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his significant contributions to governance during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration (1999-2007). Speaking in an interview on Thursday, El-Rufai acknowledged Atiku’s involvement in key economic reforms, privatization efforts, and policy initiatives that shaped Nigeria’s economic trajectory in the early 2000s.

El-Rufai, who served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during Obasanjo’s administration, revealed that Atiku played a crucial role in driving the administration’s economic agenda, particularly in restructuring Nigeria’s business environment. He highlighted Atiku’s leadership in the National Council on Privatization (NCP), which oversaw the sale of underperforming government enterprises to improve efficiency and attract private sector investment.

“Atiku was instrumental in the privatization program under Obasanjo. Many of the reforms we implemented were strongly supported by him. His commitment to opening up the economy helped pave the way for private sector participation in key industries,” El-Rufai said.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, where Atiku is expected to play a significant role. While Atiku has yet to declare his intention to contest in 2027, political analysts believe he remains a formidable force within the opposition.

Atiku’s supporters have welcomed El-Rufai’s remarks, viewing them as an acknowledgment of his governance experience and leadership capacity. However, critics argue that despite his contributions, his past association with the ruling elite has left him disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians today.

As Nigeria continues to navigate economic and political challenges, El-Rufai’s praise of Atiku has reignited debates over leadership, governance, and the legacy of past administrations in shaping the country’s future.
