LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has said he celebrates divorce when it allows people to leave unhappy marriages, arguing that no one should remain trapped in a relationship that causes suffering.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Morayo Show, the comedian said divorce can sometimes represent freedom and relief for one or both partners involved in a marriage.

“I celebrate when people get divorced because I feel it means one or both people were not breathing well in the marriage. I will not suffer anybody, neither will I want anybody to suffer me,” Bovi said.

The entertainer, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as a dismissal of the value of marriage, noting that long-term relationships often come with challenges.

“That is not to say my marriage has been easy for 17 years. It has not. I got married at 29. I have been providing for 17 years nonstop,” he added.

Reflecting on Marriage and Family Roles

Bovi, 46, has been married to Kris Asimonye since 2009. The couple share three children — David, Elena and Chuchu — and have frequently shared glimpses of their family life on social media. In 2025, they marked their 16th wedding anniversary with family photographs and messages celebrating their relationship.

The comedian has previously spoken about marriage, family responsibilities and gender roles within the home. While acknowledging the traditional expectation that men should provide for their families, he stressed the importance of supporting women in pursuing their ambitions and achieving financial independence.

According to Bovi, women who contribute financially to their households should be recognised and appreciated for their efforts.

Debate on Marriage and Divorce

His comments have sparked conversations online about the realities of modern marriages and the increasing acceptance of divorce as an option for couples facing irreconcilable differences.

Bovi’s remarks come amid broader discussions on relationships, mental well-being and personal fulfillment, with many public figures advocating healthier approaches to marriage and family life.
