LAS VEGAS — Brazilian welterweight contender Gabriel Bonfim strengthened his claim for a UFC title shot after defeating former champion Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex on Sunday.
Bonfim delivered a composed and dominant performance across five rounds, earning identical scores of 50-45 from all three judges to secure one of the biggest victories of his career.
The bout began with tension as both fighters declined to touch gloves before the opening bell. Bonfim quickly established control, using sharp punches and effective striking combinations, while Muhammad relied on kicks and attempted takedown setups to close the distance.
The Brazilian gained significant momentum in the second round, landing a series of damaging kicks and a quick combination that visibly hurt Muhammad and left the former champion bloodied.
Muhammad attempted to increase the pressure in the third round and sought a takedown, but Bonfim successfully defended the effort and continued to dictate the pace with accurate jabs and counter-striking.
Bonfim maintained control in the championship rounds, repeatedly finding success with his jab and leg kicks while frustrating Muhammad’s attacks. Despite Muhammad’s attempts to force exchanges, the Brazilian remained composed and consistently landed the cleaner strikes.
The victory places Bonfim firmly among the leading contenders in the UFC’s highly competitive welterweight division.
In the co-main event, Brendan Allen defeated Edmen Shahbazyan by unanimous decision after a closely contested three-round battle. Judges scored the contest 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 in Allen’s favour.
Elsewhere on the main card, rising light heavyweight prospect Iwo Baraniewski continued his impressive run with a first-round technical knockout victory over Junior Tafa.
Baraniewski targeted Tafa’s lead leg early before dropping him during a clinch exchange. The Dana White’s Contender Series graduate then finished the fight with a barrage of ground-and-pound strikes just 1 minute and 25 seconds into the opening round.
Former featherweight contender Bryce Mitchell also recorded his second consecutive victory since moving to the bantamweight division. Mitchell submitted Santiago Luna with an arm-triangle choke at 4:52 of the third round after controlling much of the grappling exchanges throughout the fight.
Tom Nolan also emerged victorious on the card, earning a unanimous decision win over Farès Ziam.
The headline result leaves Bonfim with a signature victory over a former UFC champion and strengthens his credentials as a serious contender in the welterweight title picture.
