LONDON — Tennis legend Serena Williams and rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko have been handed a difficult first-round match at the Queen’s Club Championships after being drawn against third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.
The highly anticipated doubles partnership will mark Williams’ return to competitive tennis for the first time since the 2022 US Open.
Tournament organisers confirmed earlier this week that Williams and Mboko had received a main-draw wildcard for the WTA 500 grass-court event at Queen’s Club.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, announced on Monday that she would be returning to professional tennis, ending months of speculation about a possible comeback.
The 44-year-old will team up with 19-year-old Mboko, one of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis, for her first match back on tour.
Their opening opponents, however, present a formidable challenge.
Although Melichar-Martinez and Routliffe are making their debut as a team at Queen’s, both players are among the world’s leading doubles specialists and have previously won Grand Slam doubles titles.
Their experience and ranking make them one of the strongest pairs in the tournament.
Ahead of the tournament, Williams and Mboko trained together for the first time at Queen’s Club on Thursday.
Mboko later shared her excitement about partnering one of the sport’s greatest players.
“The Queen is back,” Mboko wrote on social media.
“An honor to share the court with one of the greatest athletes of all time this week. Even more excited to play doubles together! Tennis is pretty special.”
The partnership has generated significant attention within the tennis world, with fans eager to see how Williams performs after nearly four years away from competitive action.
The first-round encounter is expected to attract one of the largest crowds of the tournament, given the global interest surrounding Williams’ comeback.
While the attention will largely focus on the former world No. 1, the spotlight could also add a unique dynamic to the match as Melichar-Martinez and Routliffe navigate an atmosphere unlike a typical doubles contest.
A victory over the third seeds would provide Williams with an impressive start to her return and boost confidence ahead of any future appearances on the WTA Tour.
For Mboko, the match represents another significant milestone in her rapidly developing career as she shares the court with one of tennis’ most decorated champions.
