ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity across Nigeria, declaring that the government will not surrender to bandits, terrorists or any form of criminal intimidation.
The president’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during the national inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement issued by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume said Tinubu remains focused on addressing the country’s security and economic challenges while ensuring that citizens benefit from the dividends of democracy.
According to Akume, the administration recognises the economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting many Nigerians and is working to address the challenges with urgency.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said.
The SGF assured Nigerians that the safe return of citizens held captive by criminal groups remains a priority, adding that security agencies are being strengthened and equipped to confront threats across the country.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Akume stated.
He noted that the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999 reflects the resilience of Nigerians and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, particularly those who fought during the June 12 struggle.
With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akume urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and divisive rhetoric.
He specifically warned young people against allowing themselves to be used for political thuggery, misinformation campaigns and acts of violence.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he said.
The SGF also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media and families to continue promoting peace, tolerance and national unity.
Akume further commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their contributions to national security and the preservation of democratic governance.
The Democracy Day celebrations commemorate the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria and honour the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s democratic development.
