Rangers International F.C. have emerged champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City F.C. at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Sunday.
The victory sealed Rangers’ ninth league title in the club’s history and confirmed their return to the summit of Nigerian football.
Rangers captain Chidiebere Nwobodo delivered a match-winning performance, scoring both goals for the Flying Antelopes.
Nwobodo opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a spectacular finish before doubling Rangers’ lead after reacting quickest to a rebound opportunity to make it 2-0.
Ikorodu City pulled one goal back late in the game, but Rangers held firm to secure the crucial victory needed to clinch the title.
The Coal City side finished the season with 68 points, just one point ahead of Rivers United F.C., who also recorded a convincing 3-0 win in their final fixture.
The latest triumph marks Rangers’ second NPFL title in three seasons and brings them level with Enyimba F.C. as the most successful clubs in Nigerian league history with nine titles each.
The achievement is expected to further reignite the long-standing rivalry between both oriental clubs.
Following their title success, Rangers will represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League alongside Rivers United.
In one of the most dramatic moments of the season, Remo Stars F.C. were relegated from the NPFL, becoming the first defending league champions in Nigerian football history to suffer relegation during their title defence campaign.
The Ikenne-based side saw their relegation confirmed after Kun Khalifat F.C. defeated Wikki Tourists F.C. 3-1.
Hours earlier, Remo Stars had failed to secure survival after settling for a draw against Bendel Insurance F.C..
Remo Stars entered the final day knowing that only a victory would guarantee their safety.
The club initially appeared on course for survival after taking the lead in the first half against Bendel Insurance.
However, their hopes were shattered deep into added time when Bendel Insurance scored a dramatic equaliser to deny them all three points.
Remo Stars ended the season level on 47 points with Kwara United F.C., but their inferior goal difference ultimately sealed their relegation.
The shocking outcome marks one of the most dramatic collapses in NPFL history and is likely to trigger major questions about the club’s future direction following a disastrous title defence campaign.
