Residents of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area have staged a protest over persistent flooding in the community, calling on the federal and Anambra State governments to urgently intervene.
The demonstrators, made up of youths, community leaders, and other stakeholders, marched through several parts of the town carrying placards with messages highlighting the worsening condition in the area.
Some of the inscriptions displayed during the protest read, “FG, Soludo, save us,” “Ogidi is drowning,” and “Save our children from flooding.”
The protesters described the flooding as a growing humanitarian and environmental crisis that continues to threaten lives, destroy property, and disrupt economic activities within the community.
The traditional ruler of Ogidi, Alexander Onyido, said residents have endured repeated flooding incidents that have displaced families and negatively affected livelihoods.
According to him, the situation has continued to worsen despite repeated appeals for intervention and infrastructural improvements.
He noted that businesses and daily economic activities in the community have been severely disrupted due to damaged roads and flooded residential areas.
Speaking during the protest, the youth leader of the community, Chris Obi-Okafor, warned that the flooding is now affecting education, transportation, and commercial activities.
He said many residents struggle with mobility during heavy rainfall, while students and traders are among those most impacted by the worsening conditions.
The protesters urged both the federal government and the administration of Charles Soludo to immediately address the drainage and erosion challenges responsible for the flooding.
Residents said urgent action is needed to prevent further destruction and protect lives within the community.
