The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of counterfeit and potentially hazardous toothpaste products falsely branded as Colgate.
In a statement, the agency said it received a complaint about the distribution of unregistered Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna, triggering an investigation by its Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate.
During a follow-up visit to a retail outlet, NAFDAC officials discovered two suspected counterfeit variants, Colgate ActivGel 100g and Colgate Herbal 100g, being sold to unsuspecting customers. The agency described the products as unregistered and warned that they pose potential risks to public health.

According to NAFDAC, the items were immediately removed from circulation, while efforts are ongoing to trace those responsible for distributing them. The agency added that the shop owner claimed the products were supplied by a door-to-door sales representative but could not provide any documentation or proof of purchase.
The development highlights growing concerns around counterfeit consumer goods in Nigeria, particularly products that come into direct contact with the body. NAFDAC urged the public to remain vigilant, verify product authenticity, and report suspicious items to the authorities.
While investigations continue, the agency’s warning signals a broader push to clamp down on fake and substandard goods that could endanger consumers.
