Crystal Palace F.C. secured the first European trophy in the club’s history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig on Wednesday.
French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal early in the second half to seal a historic victory and hand departing manager Oliver Glasner another major title.
After a tense first half with limited clear-cut opportunities, Mateta reacted quickest to a rebound in the 51st minute, turning home the only goal of the match after Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla parried a powerful effort from Adam Wharton.
The victory marks the most successful era in Crystal Palace’s history under Glasner, who leaves the club with three trophies in two years.
The Austrian coach departs after guiding Palace to the UEFA Conference League title, following their FA Cup triumph last season and Community Shield success earlier this campaign.
Glasner, who previously won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt, once again demonstrated his reputation as a knockout competition specialist.
The title also secured Palace’s return to the Europa League after the club had initially qualified for the competition this season before being demoted to the Conference League over multi-club ownership regulations.
Crystal Palace overcame the departures of key players including Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi during the season to complete a remarkable European campaign.
Mateta’s heroics were especially notable after the striker came close to leaving the club for A.C. Milan during the winter transfer window.
Rayo Vallecano entered the final unbeaten in nine matches and searching for the first major trophy in the club’s history.
The Spanish side created the first real opening of the game when Alemao flashed a shot narrowly wide midway through the first half.
Palace almost took the lead before the break after Adam Wharton delivered a precise cross for Tyrick Mitchell, whose header drifted just past the post.
The Premier League side came alive after halftime and nearly doubled their advantage moments after Mateta’s goal when Yeremy Pino struck a free-kick that bounced off both posts before being cleared.
Despite Rayo’s efforts to respond, Palace comfortably protected their lead and saw out the victory with little late pressure.
The triumph means Palace become the third London club in as many years to win the UEFA Conference League, following successes by West Ham United F.C. and Chelsea F.C. in previous editions.
