Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Declares U.S. Tariffs a ‘National Crisis’ and Calls for Comprehensive Countermeasures

 Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has labeled the recent tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump as a “national crisis,” highlighting the significant threat they pose to Japan’s economy. 

On April 4, 2025, Ishiba addressed the National Diet, emphasizing the urgency of a unified and strategic response to mitigate the adverse effects of the 24% levy on Japanese imports announced by the U.S. administration. ​

The United States has been a major destination for Japanese exports, and the newly imposed tariffs are expected to impact key industries, including automotive and electronics. In response, Prime Minister Ishiba has initiated cross-party discussions to formulate effective countermeasures and has instructed relevant ministries to explore all necessary actions to protect Japan’s economic interests. 

Economists warn that the escalating trade tensions could lead to a slowdown in Japan’s economic growth, urging the government to seek diplomatic solutions while simultaneously preparing domestic industries for potential challenges ahead.
