BRATISLAVA, June 14 — Ivorian football legend and former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been appointed head coach of Slovan Bratislava, the Slovak champions announced on Saturday.
Toure signed a three-year contract with Slovakia’s most successful football club and is expected to be officially presented to supporters on Monday.
The appointment marks a historic milestone for the club, with the 43-year-old becoming Slovan Bratislava’s first Black head coach and the first coach of African descent in the club’s history.
Toure takes over after leaving his role as assistant coach of the Saudi Arabia national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing what will be his first managerial position.
Speaking on the appointment, Slovan Bratislava chief executive Ivan Kmotrik Jr. said Toure stood out among several candidates during the recruitment process.
“My goal was to bring in someone with the experience of the highest level of world soccer and who is also highly motivated to make a name for himself as a coach,” Kmotrik Jr. said.
“I had several face-to-face meetings with Yaya Touré. It all started with our first video call, during which he made an amazing impression on me. That first impression was so strong that it was very difficult for other candidates to top it.
“I could tell right away that we were on the same wavelength and shared a similar mindset about how to be successful. Yaya has a great desire and motivation to succeed as a coach with Slovan Bratislava.”
The club executive expressed confidence that Toure’s experience at the highest levels of football would help drive the team forward as it seeks continued domestic and European success.
Toure, a four-time African Footballer of the Year and winner of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast national football team, said he was excited to begin the next chapter of his career.
“I want to build on what has already been achieved while also bringing something new and unique of my own,” Toure said.
“Football is everything to me. I love challenges and am incredibly excited to coach a great club with a rich history, a beautiful stadium and high ambitions.
“With Slovan, I want to play dominant soccer, win games and control matches so that we can delight our fans.”
The former midfielder added that he had already begun studying the squad and was looking forward to working closely with the players when training begins.
Toure also highlighted the influence of former mentor Roberto Mancini, under whom he previously served as an assistant coach.
“As an assistant, I had the opportunity to work with Roberto Mancini, but I have long wanted to work on my own project as a head coach,” he said.
“I appreciate that this opportunity is coming at a top club. I recently watched Slovan in the Champions League against Manchester City, and I really cannot wait for Monday.”
Toure takes charge of a team that has dominated Slovak football in recent years, winning eight consecutive league titles.
His immediate objectives will be to maintain the club’s domestic dominance and guide Slovan Bratislava into the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The appointment represents the most significant coaching challenge of Toure’s career as he seeks to replicate the success he enjoyed as one of Africa’s most decorated footballers.
