Tuchel Criticises England’s ‘Freestyle’ Display After Narrow Win Over New Zealand

TAMPA, Florida — England manager Thomas Tuchel has criticised his side’s first-half performance after they laboured to a 1-0 victory over New Zealand national football team in a World Cup warm-up match in Florida.

A goal from captain Harry Kane shortly before half-time secured the win at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, but Tuchel admitted he was far from satisfied with England’s overall display.

Kane turned home a cross from Djed Spence to score the only goal of the game as England continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tuchel Unhappy With First-Half Performance

Speaking after the match, Tuchel said England lacked structure and discipline in the opening half, describing the team’s play as overly “freestyle.”

“I’m OK with it. I’m not super happy about it. I liked the second half more than the first half,” Tuchel said.

“I think we had more bite in the second half, were more aggressive on and off the ball, created a bit more and played with more speed.”

The former Chelsea boss explained that players frequently drifted out of position during the first half, making it difficult for England to maintain pressure and recover possession quickly.

“The first half we were out of positions and it was a bit too much freestyle. That slowed our game down and made it difficult for counter-press because we were not in the positions that we wanted to be when we started attacking,” he added.

Tuchel rotated his squad heavily, fielding a different starting XI in each half as he assessed players ahead of the tournament.

New Zealand Coach Says England Must Improve

Despite the defeat, New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley said England would need to raise their level if they hope to challenge for World Cup glory.

“England were good today, but they need to be better to go and win the World Cup than they were today, even though they won the game,” Bazeley said.

He noted that both teams were primarily focused on building fitness and adapting to tournament conditions ahead of the competition.

Heat and Pitch Conditions Pose Challenge

Tuchel also highlighted the difficult playing conditions in Florida, where temperatures reached around 35 degrees Celsius.

The England manager described the pitch as uneven and admitted it affected the quality of play.

“It was very difficult to play on. We have no injuries and there were no concerns, but it was very uneven. It was difficult to move the ball and move the ball quickly,” he said.

The German coach, however, welcomed the opportunity for his players to experience conditions similar to those they may encounter during the World Cup.

England’s preparations will continue with another friendly against Costa Rica national football team, with Tuchel expected to have a stronger squad available after the arrival of several players who were absent from the New Zealand fixture.

Kane’s strike marked his 79th international goal for England, further extending his record as the country’s all-time leading scorer as the Three Lions continue their build-up to the World Cup.
