Governor Hope Uzodimma has defended President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, arguing that the administration is prioritising long-term structural changes rather than delaying tough economic realities.

Speaking on Thursday at the 15th Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance in Owerri, the Imo State governor said Nigeria is currently at a “critical juncture,” where leadership decisions will shape the country’s future trajectory.

According to him, the Tinubu administration has demonstrated political will by embracing policies centred on accountability, transparency, and systemic reform, choices he described as necessary, even if difficult.

Uzodimma frames reforms as necessary, not avoidable

Mr Uzodimma said the president’s approach reflects a deliberate effort to rebuild the country’s economic and institutional foundations rather than rely on temporary relief measures.

He noted that upon assuming office in May 2023, Mr Tinubu inherited deep-rooted economic challenges but opted for structural reforms instead of what he termed “short-term fixes.”

“The president chose to rebuild Nigeria’s foundation rather than postpone the day of reckoning,” he said, pointing to what he described as improving macroeconomic indicators, including foreign reserves, GDP growth, and crude oil production. He added that inflationary pressures are also beginning to ease.

The governor defined good governance as leadership that delivers measurable improvements in citizens’ lives through adherence to the rule of law, inclusiveness, and responsiveness to public needs. He argued that such governance requires leaders to prioritise national interest over personal or political gain.

Anyaoku’s legacy cited as model for leadership

Mr Uzodimma also used the platform to highlight the legacy of elder statesman Emeka Anyaoku, whom he described as a model of principled leadership and integrity.

He said Mr Anyaoku’s career, including his role in international diplomacy and governance advocacy, offers lessons for contemporary leaders. He particularly referenced his involvement in election observation missions and conflict resolution efforts across multiple countries.

The governor recalled that during Mr Anyaoku’s tenure as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Nigeria was suspended in 1995 following the annulment of the June 12 election and the execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and others.

He described the decision as a demonstration of principled leadership, noting that Mr Anyaoku upheld democratic values even when the consequences affected his home country.

Leadership must prioritise long-term national interest

Beyond historical reflections, Mr Uzodimma stressed that Nigeria’s current leadership moment demands courage and foresight, especially in navigating economic reforms that may not yield immediate comfort.

He maintained that sustainable development can only be achieved when leaders are willing to make decisions that secure long-term national stability, even at short-term political cost.

While acknowledging ongoing economic pressures faced by Nigerians, the governor insisted that the reform path chosen by the Tinubu administration remains essential for repositioning the country’s economy and governance structure over time.
