Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has called on politicians preparing for the 2027 general elections to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid personal attacks, insults and divisive rhetoric. The governor made the appeal on Thursday at the closing ceremony of a three-day prayer summit held to mark the fourth year of his administration in Uyo, the state capital. Eno Calls for Politics of Ideas Speaking at the event, Eno said elections should be won through ideas, programmes and performance rather than name-calling and bitterness. According to him, while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to belong to a political party of their choice, political engagements must be conducted with decorum to preserve peace and stability. “As we go into the election, let us continue to maintain decorum. Everyone is free to join any political party, but I know one thing, power belongs to God,” the governor said. Eno stressed that leadership should not be driven by vindictiveness or the desire to undermine opponents, adding that Akwa Ibom had moved beyond such politics. “Let us have a battle of ideas and let the people decide who God has sent to them. Let us tell the people what we have done and what we intend to do,” he added. The governor's remarks come as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. Governor Seeks Unity Among Religious Leaders Eno also used the occasion to call for greater unity and reconciliation among religious leaders across the state. He said peace and development could only thrive in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. The governor welcomed several clerics, including Archbishop Cletus Bassey and Rev. Angela Ashong, describing their participation in the summit as a demonstration of collective commitment to the progress of Akwa Ibom State. “I use this opportunity to call on all spiritual fathers and mothers. We do not hold any grudge against anyone. Our strength is in our togetherness, and we must continue to work and pray together for the peace of our state,” he said. Eno also urged citizens to continue praying for Nigeria and its leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Prayer Summit Features Worship and Educational Support As part of activities marking the summit, the governor announced educational support for members of the Young Professionals and Harmonic Voices choir groups in recognition of their contributions during the programme. The event featured worship sessions and ministrations by gospel ministers Mercy Chinwo and Gaise Baba. Delivering a sermon titled "Provoking the Supernatural Wonders of God", Apostle Joshua Talena, Senior Pastor of Shepherd House Auditorium, urged Christians to deepen their relationship with God through repentance and spiritual growth. Also speaking, Sylvanus Ukafia, Senior Pastor of Insight Bible Church, said God's wonders operate according to His divine timetable and often follow consecration and obedience. He added that spiritual and moral values remain essential to the future development of society. The prayer summit formed part of activities marking the fourth anniversary of the Eno administration and attracted religious leaders, government officials and residents from across the state.
