Accreditation and voting were yet to begin more than an hour after the scheduled commencement time at Polling Units 004 and 047 in Kubwa, Abuja, during the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections.
The exercise, supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was expected to start at 8:30 a.m. However, as of about 9:40 a.m., electoral officials were still making preparations at the affected polling units.
Voters who arrived early expressed frustration over the delay, questioning why activities had not commenced despite the official timeline.
Speaking at the scene, the Presiding Officer for the unit, Ereh Patience, attributed the delay to issues encountered at their lodging camp. While she did not provide detailed explanations, she assured that accreditation and voting were about to begin.
At the time of observation, an Assistant Presiding Officer was seen pasting the voter register with support from a party agent, signaling that preparations were still ongoing well past the designated start time.

Similarly, at Polling Unit 047, officials were still arranging voting materials and setting up the booth close to 10 a.m. Party agents present at the location said they had yet to hold a formal briefing with the Presiding Officer, who was reportedly momentarily absent.
Several voters who arrived ahead of schedule voiced dissatisfaction with the situation. One voter, who chose not to be identified, said he arrived at the polling unit as early as 8:00 a.m. in anticipation of a prompt start.
According to him, electoral staff arrived around the official commencement time but did not immediately begin the process.
“It’s disappointing,” he said. “We came early to exercise our civic duty, but we’re still waiting.”
Such delays, though not uncommon in some elections, often contribute to reduced voter turnout, especially among individuals with tight schedules.
Tinubu Urges INEC to Ensure Prompt Results Transmission in FCT, Kano and Rivers Polls
The FCT Area Council elections are a critical component of grassroots governance in Abuja, determining leadership across local administrative councils. Smooth logistics and punctual commencement are essential to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

While INEC officials at the Kubwa units have indicated that voting would begin shortly, observers say timely deployment and efficient coordination remain key to ensuring a credible and orderly election.
As the day unfolds, attention will likely remain on how quickly operations stabilize and whether the delays will affect overall voter participation in the area.
