Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’ Earns Platinum Certification in the UK

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr’s hit single ‘Rush’ was awarded platinum certification by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for surpassing 600,000 units sold in the United Kingdom. The 2022 track, a standout from her debut album 19 & Dangerous, has become a global anthem, blending Afrobeats with pop and R&B influences. 

The certification marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old artist, born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, who has rapidly risen to international prominence since signing with Mavin Records in 2020. Rush,’ known for its infectious rhythm and empowering lyrics about ambition and resilience, peaked at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the Top 40 for 12 weeks. Its viral success on streaming platforms, coupled with a vibrant music video showcasing Lagos’ youth culture, propelled its commercial performance. 

The song’s universal appeal has led to over 1 billion global streams, with the UK contributing significantly due to its large African diaspora and growing appetite for Afrobeats. Starr’s performance of ‘Rush’ at major events, including Glastonbury 2024, further boosted its popularity among British audiences.

The platinum certification places Starr among a select group of Nigerian artists, like Wizkid and Burna Boy, achieving such recognition in the UK. She expressed gratitude to her fans, noting that the song’s success reflects the genre’s global rise. Starr’s 2025 has been marked by other accolades, including a Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Performance and collaborations with artists like Chris Brown. With her sophomore album The Year I Turned 21 released in 2024, Starr continues to dominate charts, and ‘Rush’ remains a cornerstone of her growing legacy, cementing her as a leading voice in Afrobeats’ international expansion.
