Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing prolonged internal crisis within his former party.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, who said the move followed extensive consultations with political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.
According to the statement, the defection was finalised during a meeting held at the Government House in Gusau, where senior government officials and political stakeholders gathered. The event was led by the deputy governor, Mani Mummuni.
The governor’s spokesperson said the decision was taken after careful consideration of the political situation within the PDP at both the national and state levels.

He noted that ongoing leadership disagreements and unresolved structural issues within the party had created uncertainty that could distract from governance and development efforts in the state.
The statement explained that the governor considered it necessary to align with a political platform that could offer greater stability and cooperation with the federal government.
According to the aide, the decision was driven by the need to prioritise peace, security and development in Zamfara State.

The state government also called on residents, political leaders, and party supporters to remain calm and continue supporting the administration, noting that the move was intended to promote unity and accelerate development in the state.
