The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has suspended its strike just hours after it began on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
The decision followed discussions between ASUU and the university administration, led by Prof Foluso Lesi. The union had initially withdrawn services to protest “amputated” salaries for January and February 2026, including unpaid Earned Academic Allowances, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowances for Research, Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances, and professorial allowances.
ASUU Chairman Prof Idou Keinde said the strike was suspended after the administration promised to address the issues within 48 hours. Discussions focused on reconciling positions on allowances and verifying documentation from the Federal Government/ASUU 2025 agreement.

Keinde emphasised that the suspension was procedural and aimed at protecting students, particularly those taking ongoing examinations. “We cannot have them as pawns on a chessboard because our children are also here,” he stated, adding that ASUU would provide evidence to correct the incomplete allowances.

UNILAG management, through Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, faulted the union for initiating the strike without following due process but reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the unpaid allowances. Examinations proceeded as scheduled in most departments, with a few postponed until Thursday.
The suspension signals a temporary truce as both parties work toward a resolution of salary disputes, with a 48-hour deadline for the university to act on the union’s demands.
