The University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has expelled 28 students over offences ranging from result forgery to burglary and possession of hard drugs, in one of the institution’s largest disciplinary crackdowns in recent years.

The expulsions were approved during the university’s 191st regular senate meeting, following the submission of findings by its disciplinary committee. The committee investigated allegations of serious misconduct involving multiple students across different faculties.

According to a statement issued by the university’s spokesperson, Habib Yakoob, the senate concluded that the affected students were guilty of gross violations of the institution’s code of conduct.

Offences include forged admission results, theft, and drug use

University authorities said the offences included falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded to the school’s admission portal, which directly undermines the integrity of the admission process. Some of the students were also found culpable of burglary, theft, assault, and conspiracy.

Additionally, the investigation uncovered cases involving possession and use of hard drugs, raising broader concerns about student conduct and campus safety.

The university described the offences as serious breaches that could not be tolerated, emphasizing the need to maintain academic standards and discipline within the institution.

Decision signals tougher stance on academic fraud

The expulsions highlight a growing effort by Nigerian universities to clamp down on academic fraud and criminal behaviour within their systems. Result forgery, in particular, remains a persistent issue across higher education institutions, often involving falsified credentials used to gain admission.

By taking decisive action, the university appears to be sending a strong message about accountability and the consequences of violating institutional rules.

Expulsions come amid broader scrutiny of university governance

The disciplinary action comes at a time when the institution has faced increased scrutiny over governance and administrative matters, including recent allegations of financial misconduct involving senior officials.
