Nigerian singer Simi, born Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, has addressed criticism following the resurfacing of several old tweets she made more than a decade ago.
The posts, originally shared between 2012 and 2015, recently began circulating widely on X (formerly Twitter), prompting heated reactions from social media users. Critics described some of the comments as inappropriate, while others questioned the context in which they were written.
The controversy gained traction over the weekend, with screenshots of the tweets shared across multiple platforms.
In a statement posted Sunday night, the 37-year-old artist said she became aware of the resurfaced tweets after they were brought to her attention. She explained that at the time the posts were made, she was not a public figure and frequently shared everyday experiences online.
Simi stated that she worked at her mother’s daycare while building her music career and often tweeted about her daily interactions with children at the facility. According to her, the comments were intended as lighthearted observations and not expressions of wrongdoing.
“I was not famous at the time,” she said, adding that she believes her words are now being interpreted through a different lens because of her public status.

She strongly denied any inappropriate intent, describing the backlash as an attempt to twist her words into “false narratives.”
As the discussion grew online, several of the old posts were deleted. Simi said members of her team removed some of the tweets due to their sensitivity and the impact on her family.
She emphasised that she has consistently spoken out against sexual violence and has publicly condemned rape and abuse long before achieving mainstream fame. According to her, those values remain unchanged.

The singer also said she has never claimed to be perfect but maintained that the resurfaced posts do not reflect any form of misconduct.
The episode has reignited discussions about social media history, public accountability, and how past online behaviour is judged years later. In the age of screenshots and digital archives, posts made long before fame can resurface and generate new scrutiny.

For public figures, especially entertainers, the permanence of online content often means earlier expressions, whether jokes, slang, or casual commentary, are revisited under contemporary standards.
While opinions remain divided among fans and critics, Simi’s response underscores the challenges celebrities face when old social media content re-emerges in today’s heightened digital climate.
