Russia, Ukraine to observe temporary Easter ceasefire

Russia and Ukraine are set to begin a temporary ceasefire for the Orthodox Easter period, offering a brief pause in a war that has dragged on for four years with devastating human and economic costs.

The Kremlin announced that the truce would take effect from Saturday afternoon and last for 32 hours, ending on Sunday. Russian authorities said troops had been instructed to halt hostilities across all fronts during the period.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv was willing to observe the ceasefire, noting that Ukraine had repeatedly expressed readiness for a temporary pause during the Easter celebrations.

The development comes at a time when diplomatic efforts, largely led by the United States, have struggled to produce a lasting agreement between both sides, with attention increasingly shifting to tensions in the Middle East.

Despite the planned truce, hostilities continued in the hours leading up to it. Ukrainian authorities reported fresh attacks in multiple regions, including the southern city of Odesa, where casualties were recorded. Other regions such as Poltava and Sumy also reported deaths and injuries following overnight strikes.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched more than 100 drones in attacks shortly before the ceasefire window, underscoring the fragile nature of the agreement.

Peace talks remain stalled

The temporary ceasefire is not linked to any formal peace negotiations, according to Kremlin officials, who said no prior agreement was reached with Ukraine or its allies before announcing the truce.

Talks aimed at ending the war have remained deadlocked, with Russia insisting on territorial and political concessions that Ukraine has firmly rejected. Kyiv has maintained that such demands would amount to a surrender of sovereignty.

The conflict has become the deadliest in Europe since World War II, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and displacing millions of people since it began.

Battlefield dynamics shifting

While fighting has continued, the pace of Russia’s territorial gains has slowed in recent months, even as it retains control of roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

Analysts say Ukrainian counteroffensives in some regions, alongside logistical challenges facing Russian forces, have contributed to the slowdown. However, the situation remains difficult for Ukraine in eastern regions like Donetsk, where intense fighting continues around key cities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has faced mounting pressure over the prolonged war, while Ukraine continues to rely on international support to sustain its defence.

Although similar Easter ceasefires have been observed in the past, they have rarely led to lasting peace, leaving uncertainty over whether this latest pause will translate into any meaningful progress toward ending the conflict.
