Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has congratulated his predecessor, Okezie Ikpeazu, following his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, describing the development as a recognition of his experience in public service.
In a statement issued on Monday, Otti said the diplomatic role offers Ikpeazu an opportunity to represent Nigeria on the international stage while promoting the country’s interests and strengthening bilateral relations with Spain.
The governor noted that diplomatic appointments carry significant responsibility, especially at a time when Nigeria is seeking stronger economic, cultural, and political partnerships with countries across Europe. He said Ikpeazu’s background in governance and administration could help him effectively represent Nigeria and contribute to advancing the country’s diplomatic priorities abroad.
While congratulating the former governor, Otti also expressed appreciation to Bola Tinubu, president of Nigeria, for appointing Ikpeazu and other ambassadors to represent the country in various foreign missions.
He said the appointments demonstrate the federal government’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation globally and urged authorities in Abuja to provide the newly appointed ambassadors with adequate institutional support.
According to him, diplomatic assignments often require strong backing from the federal government, including financial resources, policy direction, and administrative coordination, to enable ambassadors perform their roles effectively and project Nigeria’s image positively.

The governor added that providing such support would help the diplomats succeed in promoting Nigeria’s economic interests, facilitating international partnerships, and protecting the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
Otti also expressed optimism that Ikpeazu would bring his experience as a former state governor to bear in his new role. He noted that leadership experience at the state level often equips public officials with valuable insights into governance, economic development and international cooperation.
Nigeria’s ambassadors serve as the country’s official representatives in foreign nations, where they work to strengthen diplomatic relations, promote trade and investment opportunities, and support Nigerian citizens residing in those countries.
Spain remains an important European partner for Nigeria in areas such as trade, migration cooperation, cultural exchange and development partnerships. Diplomatic engagement between both countries has continued to grow in recent years, with increasing interest in economic collaboration and bilateral initiatives.
Ikpeazu’s appointment is therefore expected to contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at deepening cooperation between Nigeria and Spain while advancing the country’s broader foreign policy objectives.
Otti concluded by wishing the former governor success in his new assignment, expressing hope that his tenure would be productive and beneficial to Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.

He said the appointment presents another opportunity for experienced public servants to contribute to national development beyond domestic politics and governance, while also strengthening Nigeria’s presence in the global diplomatic community.
