A violent clash between youths from Ijanikin and Otto areas of Lagos State left one person dead and seven others arrested, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed. The deceased, identified as Akinyemi Omo Akin, was reportedly shot during the altercation and later died at a hospital.
The incident caused the temporary closure of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis, disrupting traffic for several hours.
According to Abimbola Adebisi, the police spokesperson, the state Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, personally led joint police and tactical squads to intervene, clear the blockage, and reopen the expressway.
Adebisi clarified that reports suggesting the victim was killed by a stray police bullet were false. Preliminary investigations indicate that rival groups had engaged in gunfire, bringing in cultists before police arrival, and the victim was likely shot during this exchange.

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence, while tactical squads and anti-riot units continue to comb the surrounding communities and bushes for fleeing participants. Authorities emphasized that the response aimed not only to restore traffic but also to apprehend perpetrators and prevent further escalation of hostilities in the area.
The Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly in areas prone to youth clashes and gang-related violence. Adebisi highlighted the importance of community cooperation in curbing violence, stressing that early reporting can prevent loss of life and limit disruption to public order.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about youth unrest in Lagos, where rivalry between local groups sometimes escalates into armed confrontations. Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, using a combination of tactical interventions, intelligence gathering, and community engagement.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified information about the clashes. Authorities also warned that anyone found harboring or supporting violent actors would face strict legal consequences.

The police assured Lagosians that proactive measures, including patrols and intelligence-led operations, will continue to prevent similar incidents and safeguard lives and property. While the Lagos-Badagry Expressway has been reopened, authorities remain on high alert to deter any repeat clashes.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its pledge to uphold public safety and warned that violent behavior, particularly the use of firearms by youths, will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
