Nigeria Customs Service Seizes Undeclared $1.15 Million and SR135,900 at Kano Airport

 In a significant enforcement action, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted undeclared foreign currencies totaling $1,154,900 and 135,900 Saudi Riyals (SR) at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA). This operation highlights the NCS’s commitment to combating currency smuggling and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

The seizure occurred during a routine baggage inspection of an inbound passenger, identified as Hauwa Ibrahim Abdullahi, who arrived from Saudi Arabia on Saudi Airline Flight No. SV401. The undeclared currencies were discovered concealed within the passenger’s luggage, raising suspicions of potential money laundering activities.

Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident, emphasizing the legal requirement for travelers to declare any currency exceeding $10,000 upon entry or exit from Nigeria. Failure to do so constitutes a violation of the country’s financial laws and regulations.

The intercepted currencies have been securely deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in accordance with standard protocols. Meanwhile, the suspect is undergoing thorough investigation to determine the intent and origin of the funds. The NCS has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to uncover and prosecute any individuals or networks involved in illicit financial activities.

This incident serves as a stark reminder to travelers and the general public about the importance of adhering to financial declaration requirements.
