Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested in South Africa following an alleged shooting incident involving one of his domestic workers.

Police authorities confirmed that Mugabe was among two men arrested on Thursday in connection with the shooting, which took place at his residence in Hyde Park. The incident left a 23-year-old gardener in critical condition, prompting an immediate police response and investigation.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers arrested two suspects, aged 28 and 33, shortly after the shooting. Mugabe was taken into custody alongside the second suspect for questioning as authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nevhuhulwi said the shooting followed an altercation, although the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear. She noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and sequence of events that led to the violence.

While police did not immediately disclose Mugabe’s identity in their official statement, journalists at the scene reported seeing him being arrested and taken away in handcuffs.

Victim hospitalized as investigation continues

The victim, identified as a gardener working at the residence, was rushed to a medical facility after sustaining serious injuries. Authorities described his condition as critical, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Police have yet to confirm whether formal charges have been filed against Mugabe or the second suspect. However, investigators are expected to review evidence and witness accounts to determine the appropriate legal action.

The arrest marks a significant development involving the family of Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before his removal from power in 2017. His son’s detention has drawn public attention, particularly given the high-profile nature of the Mugabe family across southern Africa.
