The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has suspended three senior doctors following an investigation into the death of a 21-month-old child linked to acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The decision was reached by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigations Panel, an arm of the council responsible for reviewing complaints against medical professionals. The panel convened in Abuja in mid-February and concluded that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with allegations of medical negligence against the doctors involved in the child’s care.
Those suspended are Tunde Majekodunmi, medical director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital; Titus Ogundare, an anaesthesiologist at the same facility; and Atinuke Uwajeh, chief medical officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital. The trio has been barred from practising medicine in Nigeria pending the outcome of further proceedings.
In a statement issued by the panel’s secretary, Enejo Abdu, the council also disclosed that 10 other doctors would face additional investigation over alleged professional misconduct. However, eight of the 21 practitioners initially reviewed were cleared after the panel examined petitions, written responses and oral testimonies presented during its sittings.
The case stems from the death of Ms Adichie’s son in Lagos in January after he was referred from Atlantis Pediatric Hospital to Euracare for further assessment ahead of a planned medical trip abroad. According to earlier public statements by the family, complications allegedly arose after the child was sedated for diagnostic procedures.
Ms Adichie had raised concerns about the dosage of anaesthetic administered and the level of monitoring provided, stating that her son later suffered cardiac arrest. The medical facilities involved have not publicly admitted wrongdoing, and the matter remains under legal and professional review.

Separately, proceedings are ongoing at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, where a coroner’s inquest is expected to determine the cause of death.
At the last hearing, the court directed all parties to file witness statements and indicated that an autopsy report would play a central role in establishing medical facts surrounding the incident.

The council’s interim suspension underscores the seriousness with which professional oversight bodies are treating the case. While the investigation continues, officials say the objective is to ensure accountability and uphold standards within the medical profession.
