The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has deployed drones, artificial intelligence-powered monitoring tools, and GPS-enabled patrol vehicles as part of a broad digital overhaul aimed at improving traffic response across Lagos.
The agency confirmed that the initiative includes real-time surveillance drones, automatic incident detection software, mobile data terminals, and body cameras linked to a newly established central command and control centre. The integrated system is designed to replace manual reporting processes and fragmented coordination with a unified, data-driven operations platform.
According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the upgraded system provides real-time visibility of traffic situations across the state. Incidents detected through digital surveillance are verified instantly and dispatched to the nearest patrol teams using GPS tracking technology. Officers receive instructions via modern communication devices, ensuring quicker and more coordinated responses.

The command centre also consolidates feeds from toll-free hotlines, patrol vehicles, and field operatives, creating a central hub for monitoring and decision-making. Authorities say this approach significantly reduces emergency response times and improves coordination with medical and security agencies during road incidents.
LASTMA stated that the transition to digital tools has eliminated delays previously caused by poor event reporting and logistical bottlenecks. By synchronising field commanders and rescue teams on shared data networks, the agency aims to reduce secondary crashes and prolonged traffic congestion.
According to its 2025 operational summary, LASTMA rescued 1,075 people from crash scenes and impounded 17,169 vehicles for traffic violations across Lagos, largely through its toll-free reporting system and coordinated field operations. Officials say these figures demonstrate how faster reporting and response mechanisms can enhance road safety outcomes.

With the newly deployed suite of smart technologies, the agency expects further improvements in mobility management. The integration of AI-driven detection systems allows authorities to identify accidents, breakdowns, and traffic build-ups more quickly, enabling faster diversions and clearance of affected areas.

Bakare-Oki said the digital upgrade aligns with Lagos Stateās broader smart-city agenda, positioning LASTMA as a technology-enabled public safety institution. He added that the initiative lays the groundwork for more reliable, data-backed mobility management across one of Africaās busiest urban centres.
The deployment reflects a growing trend among major cities to incorporate advanced digital tools into traffic enforcement and emergency response systems. By leveraging automation and real-time analytics, Lagos authorities aim to enhance operational efficiency, reduce congestion, and strengthen road safety for residents and commuters alike.
As implementation progresses, officials expect the new platform to deliver measurable improvements in response time, coordination, and overall traffic control across the state.
