Kunle Afolayan, the acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker, has announced that he is pursuing a divorce so he can marry multiple women, marking a significant reversal from his previous stance against polygamy. The filmmaker made the revelation during a watch party for his latest movie, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens, and in a video clip that has since gone viral.
Afolayan explained that his change of heart stems from his upbringing in a polygamous family. “I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now,” he said.

He credited his personal and professional achievements to his late father, who had ten wives and 25 children, saying, “Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan. I am the seventh child of my father because he had ten wives.”

He advised men to consider marrying or being involved with multiple women, emphasizing that life is short and that people should make the most of their time.
The filmmaker’s current endorsement of polygamy contrasts sharply with a 2021 interview, where he explained that he would not follow his father’s path due to the familial challenges it created. At the time, he cited the struggle to bond with siblings because of language and cultural differences and said, “I would not want to marry many wives because my father had 10 wives, and I knew what happened throughout that period. I knew that really distracted my father.”
Afolayan’s remarks have sparked widespread debate online, with many pointing out the apparent contradiction between his past and present views.
