The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn its impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam following his voluntary resignation from office.
The decision was taken during a plenary session of the Assembly after lawmakers debated and adopted a motion to discontinue the process.
Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini, who moved the motion, explained that the legislature no longer had grounds to continue the impeachment since the official in question had already stepped down.
He stated that the Assembly’s constitutional responsibility is to remove public officials found guilty of misconduct, and that duty becomes unnecessary once resignation has occurred.
He also clarified that the Assembly’s role is distinct from anti-corruption agencies such as the EFCC or ICPC, noting that the impeachment process had effectively achieved its purpose.

The impeachment notice was initially issued over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust relating to Abdulsalam’s earlier tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs.
The proceedings had begun in March 2026 before being discontinued following his resignation.
Lawmakers referenced Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution as the legal framework guiding impeachment proceedings for public office holders, emphasizing that the process must follow due constitutional procedure.
With the withdrawal of the notice, the Assembly said the matter has now been concluded.
