
Hollywood actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, has passed away at the age of 53 following a courageous battle with ALS, a progressive motor neuron disease.
The news, confirmed in a family statement, said Dane died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, surrounded by his wife and two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were described as “the center of his world.”
Eric Dane was born in San Francisco in 1972. He faced tragedy early in life when his father, an architect, died from a gunshot wound when Dane was just seven. This loss deeply shaped his outlook on parenting and grief.
He attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City and San Mateo High School, where he was active in sports. Dane discovered his passion for acting through school stage productions, including Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.

However, his breakthrough role came in 2006 as Dr. Mark Sloan (nicknamed “McSteamy”) on Grey’s Anatomy. Originally intended as a minor character, Sloan quickly became a fan favorite and a mainstay on the show until 2012, with a return in 2021.
After Grey’s Anatomy, Dane continued to take on challenging roles, including Captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship and Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, earning acclaim for his versatility and depth.
Dane was open about his struggles with addiction and depression, often speaking about the challenges of maintaining privacy in Hollywood. He continued acting even as his health declined.
He leaves behind two daughters, remembered not only for his acting talent but also for his courage, dedication, and ability to connect with audiences worldwide.
