GM Recalls Over 62,000 U.S. Vehicles Due to Battery Fire Risk

 General Motors announced a recall of 62,000 vehicles in the United States on June 25 due to a fire risk in the battery systems of its 2023-2025 Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer EV models. 

The issue, linked to faulty battery modules, has caused 15 reported fires, with three incidents injuring drivers. The recall affects 40,000 Lyriqs and 22,000 Blazers, primarily in California and Texas, where EVs account for 15% of new sales. GM is offering software updates and free battery replacements, with 10,000 vehicles already inspected. 

The company has allocated $200 million for the recall, following $1.5 billion in prior EV recall costs. GM’s stock fell 3% on June 25, reflecting investor concerns.

The recall aligns with GM’s push for 30% EV sales by 2030, competing with Tesla’s 50% market share. Nigeria, with 1,000 GM vehicles, is unaffected. GM aims to complete repairs by Q4 2025, prioritizing high-risk areas to restore consumer confidence.
