Commercial drivers in Enugu have increased transport fares by about 10 per cent following the recent rise in petrol prices across Nigeria, affecting commuters across the state capital.

A survey across several parts of the city showed that the sudden fare increase forced many commuters, including schoolchildren, traders and artisans, to walk to their destinations after being unable to afford the new transport costs.

Commuters feel the impact across major routes

Transport fares on several busy routes have risen by about N100. The cost of travelling from Gariki to Ariaria New Market increased from N500 to N600, while commuters travelling from Meniru bus stop to Ogbete Market now pay N600 instead of N500.

Similarly, passengers moving from Amechi Junction to the gate of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu now pay N500, up from the previous N400.

Commercial buses and tricycle operators in Abakpa and Emene areas of the city have also added about N100 to fares as operators adjust to the rising cost of fuel.

Fuel scarcity worsens situation

The situation has been compounded by limited petrol supply, with only a few filling stations dispensing fuel. Some drivers said petrol prices had climbed significantly, with fuel reportedly selling for around N1,200 per litre at filling stations and up to N1,500 on the black market.

As a result, transport operators warned that fares could increase further if fuel prices remain unstable.

The development has also reduced vehicular movement in several busy locations across the city, including the popular Holy Ghost Park, where traffic and commuter activity appeared lower than usual as many residents struggled to cope with the sudden fare adjustments.
