The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that cash payments will no longer be accepted at airport gates, parking areas, and lounges across its facilities from March 1, 2026.
The decision is part of FAAN’s move to fully digitize airport transactions under its cashless payment programme aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and passenger experience.
FAAN said all passengers and visitors must use digital payment methods for services such as access gate entry, car park fees, and executive lounge access.
The agency explained that the new system will allow travellers to make faster and more secure payments using cards and contactless payment options. It also introduced a “Tap and Go” feature designed to reduce delays and eliminate queues at airport pay points.
According to FAAN, the initiative follows the cashless policy promoted by the Central Bank of Nigeria to reduce reliance on physical cash and encourage electronic transactions.

The authority assured users that the system is secure and advised passengers to seek help from airport information desks if they experience any difficulties.
The cashless system was first introduced in September 2025 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as part of a pilot programme.
FAAN said the early rollout helped prepare airport infrastructure for a nationwide transition and reduce cash handling at busy locations.
The system was developed in partnership with Paystack, which provides the digital payment terminals used at airport access points.
FAAN expects the cashless system to improve accountability, increase revenue collection, and make airport operations smoother for passengers across Nigeria.
