Enugu Reduces Band A Tariff by ₦49 Per KWH, Easing Consumer Burden

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) announced a significant reduction in its Band A tariff by ₦49 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), effective July 21, 2025, bringing the rate from ₦115 to ₦66 kWh, as disclosed by Managing Director Emeka Ezeh on July 20.

The adjustment, approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), responds to public outcry over high electricity costs, which had driven a 20% drop in consumption among Band A customers, those guaranteed 20 hours of daily supply. The reduction aims to alleviate financial strain on 150,000 households and businesses in the state.

The decision follows a 15% increase in national tariffs in June 2025, sparking protests in Enugu, where inflation hit 33%. EEDC cited improved power generation, with 4,500 megawatts now available nationwide, up from 4,000, as enabling the cut.

However, critics argue the new rate remains high compared to neighboring states like Anambra (₦60 kWh), and labor unions demand further reductions. The move is a test case for NERC’s tariff review policy, with potential implications for other discos, though implementation hinges on consistent supply, a challenge given past outages affecting 30% of Band A feeders.
