Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has initiated steps to withdraw 72 students from its Medical Laboratory Science programme due to poor academic performance, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining academic quality.

The development was confirmed in an official statement issued by the department and made available to journalists in Abakaliki on Monday. According to the department, the affected students failed to meet the minimum academic requirements needed to continue in the programme.

The decision affects students across multiple levels, highlighting what the university described as a necessary move to preserve professional and academic standards in health-related courses.

Breakdown shows widespread academic challenges

The university’s review revealed that 41 of the affected students are in the 100 level, while 31 are in the 200 level. These students were recommended for withdrawal after recording cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs) significantly below the acceptable benchmark.

Officials disclosed that many of the students had CGPAs ranging between 0.00 and 2.44, falling short of the required academic threshold for progression within the department.

In addition to those facing withdrawal, 10 students have been placed on academic probation. Of this number, eight are in the 300 level, and two are inthe 400 level. Academic probation typically serves as a warning period, allowing students to improve their performance before facing stricter consequences.

The university explained that these measures are consistent with its academic policies, which are designed to ensure that graduates meet professional standards, especially in sensitive fields like medical laboratory science.

Students’ union raises concerns over transparency

The decision has drawn attention from the Students’ Union Government (SUG), which expressed concern about the process used in compiling and publishing the withdrawal list.

The union acknowledged the university’s authority to enforce academic regulations but stressed the importance of fairness and transparency. According to the SUG leadership, there are reports suggesting that some affected students may not have fully accessed or verified their academic results before the decision was announced.

Student representatives emphasised that decisions with such serious academic implications must follow proper procedures and allow students the opportunity to confirm their records.

They also called for careful verification to ensure that no student is wrongly penalised due to administrative or technical errors.

What this means for students and academic accountability

The situation highlights the increasing pressure on universities to uphold strict academic standards, particularly in specialised programmes linked to healthcare and public safety.

Ultimately, the university’s action reflects a broader effort to balance academic integrity with student welfare, while ensuring that graduates are fully prepared for professional responsibilities.
