In a revealing interview on the Afrobeats Podcast, Bebe Cool dismissed claims that he had orchestrated the arrest, blaming the internet for creating a false narrative. He recounted how he intervened to understand the situation and ultimately helped secure their release.

“I went to the police station to find out what was happening. I spoke to one of the managers and the head of the police station and asked them why they arrested the artists,” he explained.

Bebe Cool emphasized that the arrest was not the fault of Omah Lay and Tems but rather the event promoters who failed to adhere to Uganda’s strict COVID-19 restrictions, which limited gatherings to 200 people at the time. He clarified that his previous statements, which criticized the Ugandan government for allowing Nigerian artists to perform while local musicians were banned, were misinterpreted.

“A promoter wrongfully pinned the arrest on me because I had earlier joined other Ugandan stars in demanding that the government allow us to perform too, since they were giving special treatment to Omah Lay and Tems,” he said.

He also disclosed that he received furious calls from Nigerian music heavyweights Davido and Wizkid, who demanded an explanation for the arrests.

“They called me, and I had to explain that I had nothing to do with it. I even wrote a letter to the prosecutor’s office to help get them released, but it was met with government red tape. Eventually, I was able to engage top officials, and we secured their release.”

The 2020 incident, which Tems later described as traumatizing, had led to widespread condemnation from Nigerian artists and fans, who took to social media to demand justice for their detained colleagues.
