The Bayelsa State Government has intensified its efforts to enforce the existing anti-grazing law, responding to escalating tensions between local farmers and nomadic herders. The law, enacted to regulate livestock grazing and prevent conflicts, has come under renewed focus due to recent incidents of crop destruction and clashes in rural communities.

In a recent press briefing, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. David Alagoa, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers and ensuring peaceful coexistence. He stated, “The anti-grazing law is a crucial instrument in our strategy to protect agricultural investments and maintain harmony between herders and farmers. We will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against violators.”

The Commissioner highlighted that the law mandates the confinement of livestock to designated areas and prohibits open grazing across farmlands. He called upon herders to adopt modern ranching techniques, which not only align with the law but also enhance livestock management and productivity.

To bolster enforcement, the government has initiated collaborative efforts with security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders. These stakeholders are tasked with monitoring compliance, mediating disputes, and educating their communities about the importance of adhering to the law. Residents have been encouraged to report any infractions to the authorities promptly.

The renewed enforcement drive has sparked discussions on balancing traditional pastoral practices with contemporary agricultural demands. While some herders express concerns about the feasibility of ranching due to financial constraints, the government assures that support programs and resources will be made available to facilitate the transition.
