  • The African Democratic Congress (ADC) denounced the killing of over 170 people in Kaiama, Kwara State, as a failure of national security.
  • The party criticized the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu for ineffective emergency measures, including a state of emergency and promised police recruitment.
  • ADC demanded accountability, transparent updates on security strategies, and stronger measures to curb terrorist activity.

The African Democratic Congress has raised alarm over the mass killing of civilians in Kwara State, accusing the Federal Government of failing to protect Nigerians despite repeated security interventions. The party’s statement follows confirmation from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq that terrorists massacred 75 residents in Kaiama Local Government Area, targeting locals who resisted extremist demands.

In a strongly worded release, the ADC said the tragedy exposes the fragility of Nigeria’s internal security systems and highlights gaps in intelligence, inter-agency coordination, and emergency response, urging the government to take decisive action before more communities suffer similar atrocities.

Security promises under scrutiny

The ADC criticized the Tinubu administration for what it describes as “performative security measures,” including the declaration of a state of emergency and a police recruitment drive announced in late 2025. Despite these interventions, rural communities like those in Kwara remain vulnerable to large-scale attacks. The party stressed that human lives cannot be treated as statistics and called for transparency on the progress of the promised recruitment and deployment of new security personnel.

Highlighting patterns of inaction, the ADC noted that brief periods of urgency in response to international attention have faded, leaving citizens exposed to recurring threats. The party argued that condolences and official statements are insufficient when structural failures allow terrorists to strike repeatedly.

Call for accountability and a clear strategy

The ADC urged the Federal Government to provide a comprehensive update on the state of national security, outline concrete steps to halt the expansion of terrorist networks, and ensure rural communities are adequately protected. The statement concluded that a government unable to safeguard its citizens has failed in its most fundamental responsibility, emphasising the need for accountability and immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
