The Abia State Government has unveiled plans to establish a special sports economic zone, a move aimed at transforming sports into a major driver of employment, manufacturing, and internally generated revenue.
The initiative, which is already at an advanced stage, was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, following a State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia. According to him, the project is designed to harness the state’s strong base of local craftsmanship while creating a structured sports merchandising ecosystem.
Kanu explained that the zone would serve as a hub for producing sportswear, footwear, and related equipment, positioning Abia not just as a local manufacturing centre but as a supplier to markets across Nigeria and Africa.
He added that the initiative is being driven through a partnership between the Abia State Government and Sports Nigeria, with a formal proposal already signed to kick-start implementation.
At its core, the project reflects a broader shift in how the state is approaching economic development, using sports as a gateway into industrialisation and creative enterprise.
Kanu noted that the zone would tap into the “creative ingenuity” of artisans in sectors such as leatherworks, fashion, and footwear production, industries where Abia, particularly Aba, already has a strong reputation. By integrating these skills into a formal sports value chain, the government hopes to scale production and improve quality for both local and export markets.

Beyond production, the project is also expected to generate significant revenue through taxation of participating businesses and partnerships within the zone. More importantly, it aims to absorb a large number of unemployed youths, offering them opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, branding, and retail.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, reinforced this vision, stating that local artisans would be engaged in producing items such as football boots, gym equipment, and other sports merchandise for wider African markets.
Alongside infrastructure and production, the state is also investing in human capital to sustain the ecosystem being built.
Kanu highlighted a partnership with Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic to introduce a National Diploma programme in Sports Management. The programme is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that athletes and sports enthusiasts have viable career paths beyond active competition.
The first batch of students has already been admitted and matriculated, marking an early step in building a pipeline of professionals for the sector.
Ananaba added that graduates from the programme could branch into specialised roles such as sports therapy, psychology, and management, fields that remain largely underdeveloped in Nigeria.
The government believes that combining education, manufacturing, and sports development within a single economic framework could redefine Abia’s economic trajectory, turning what has traditionally been seen as recreation into a structured and revenue-generating industry.
