A coalition of youths in Yobe State has raised N188 million in support of a potential 2027 governorship bid by former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, signalling early grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next election cycle.

The Coalition of Yobe-East Progressive Youths raised the funds during a fundraising event held on Monday in Damaturu, the state capital.

Speaking at the event, the group’s leader, Yerima Goni, said the initiative was designed to promote civic engagement and encourage active participation of young people in the political process.

According to him, the N188 million was generated through pledges, direct bank transfers, and cash donations from supporters and stakeholders across the state.

Goni noted that beyond financial support, the move reflects a growing desire among young people to shape leadership outcomes and contribute meaningfully to governance.

The fundraising event drew a wide range of participants, including youths, community leaders, and political stakeholders, highlighting what organisers described as a broad base of support within the constituency.

Grassroots support builds ahead of 2027

Although Lawan has yet to formally declare his intention to contest the governorship seat, the show of support from youth groups suggests early momentum around his potential candidacy.

Reacting to the development, the former Senate President expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a reflection of responsible citizenship and grassroots participation in the democratic process.

He said the donations demonstrate the willingness of ordinary citizens to invest in leadership they believe in, adding that such engagement is critical to strengthening democracy.

Lawan, who previously served as President of the Senate, also hinted at openness to future political opportunities, noting that he remains committed to serving the people.

While stopping short of an official declaration, he said he would respond to calls to serve if the need arises, a statement that further fuels speculation about his possible entry into the 2027 governorship race.

Youth mobilisation and political signaling

The development comes amid increasing political activity across Nigeria as stakeholders begin positioning ahead of the next general elections, with youth groups playing a more visible role in shaping narratives and endorsements.

Analysts say early fundraising efforts such as this serve both as financial mobilisation and political signalling, indicating the level of grassroots support a potential candidate may command.

For many of the participants, the initiative goes beyond politics, reflecting a broader push for inclusion and representation in leadership structures that directly affect their communities.

As the 2027 election cycle gradually comes into focus, actions like these suggest that political alignments are already taking shape at the grassroots level, even before formal declarations by key actors.
