World’s Oldest Professional Model, Daphne Selfe, Dies at 97

Daphne Selfe, widely recognised as the world’s oldest professional model, has died at the age of 97, bringing to a close a remarkable career that spanned more than seven decades.

Her family confirmed her passing in a statement shared on her Instagram page on Monday, noting that she died on March 21. In a tribute filled with admiration, they described her final moments as peaceful and fitting for someone who lived a life defined by elegance and purpose.

“She rose peacefully and purposefully towards the light, as only the sensational model in her knew how,” the family wrote, capturing the essence of a woman who remained deeply connected to her craft until the very end.

Selfe’s death marks the end of an era in the fashion world, where she stood out not just for her longevity but for redefining what it means to age in an industry often fixated on youth.

A Career That Defied Age Limits

Born on July 1, 1928, Selfe began her modelling journey in the 1950s, at a time when the industry operated under very different standards. Over the decades, she built a steady career, working with agencies and appearing in campaigns for both commercial and high-fashion brands.

She trained at the Gaby Young Agency and later became a house model for major department stores. Her portfolio included advertisements for well-known products as well as features in leading fashion publications, including Vogue.

What set Selfe apart, however, was her refusal to conform to conventional expectations around ageing. Known for her striking white hair, she chose not to dye it or undergo cosmetic surgery. Instead, she embraced her natural appearance, often attributing her enduring looks to simple habits such as proper skincare, hydration, and a balanced lifestyle.

Even in her later years, she remained active in the industry. Her family revealed that her final professional engagement took place in June 2025, when she attended a Vogue luncheon during Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day, an event that reflected her lifelong love for fashion, people, and social gatherings.

Beyond her modelling work, Selfe became a symbol of confidence and authenticity, particularly for older women navigating societal expectations around beauty and relevance. Her influence extended far beyond the runway, inspiring conversations about inclusivity and representation in fashion.

In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2019 by Queen Elizabeth II. The honour celebrated her impact on the industry and her role in challenging age-related stereotypes.

She is survived by her children: Mark, Claire, and Rose, as well as her grandchildren, Jack, Alec, Grace, and Robin.
