Brighton & Hove Albion strengthened their push for European football with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Liverpool in a Premier League clash at the Falmer Stadium on Saturday.
The result marks a significant setback for Liverpool’s ambitions of securing a Champions League spot, while Brighton continues to build momentum in their pursuit of a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League.
At the heart of the contest was Danny Welbeck, whose clinical brace proved decisive in a match that swung in intensity across both halves.
Brighton made their intent clear from the outset, pressing high and forcing early mistakes from the visitors. Their bright start paid off in the 14th minute when Welbeck rose to meet a flicked ball and guided a header past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The goal energised the home side, who continued to dictate tempo with quick transitions and coordinated attacking play. Liverpool, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm in the opening exchanges, often resorting to long balls that failed to trouble Brighton’s defensive line.
Despite their sluggish start, Liverpool gradually grew into the game and found an equaliser on the half-hour mark. Defender Milos Kerkez capitalised on a defensive lapse, looping a header into the net after confusion involving Lewis Dunk.

The goal shifted momentum in Liverpool’s favour, as they began to enjoy more possession and push Brighton deeper into their half. However, clear-cut chances remained limited, with both sides heading into the break level.
Liverpool failed to carry their improved form into the second half, appearing less aggressive and allowing Brighton to regain control of the midfield.
Sensing the drop in intensity, Brighton pressed forward once more, and their persistence paid off when Welbeck completed his brace. The veteran forward calmly tapped in a low pass from Jack Hinshelwood, restoring the hosts’ lead.
From that point, Brighton managed the game effectively, limiting Liverpool’s attacking threat while creating occasional chances on the counter.
As the clock ticked down, Liverpool pushed for another equaliser but lacked the cutting edge needed to break through Brighton’s organised defence. Several attacking moves broke down in the final third, highlighting ongoing inconsistencies in their performance.
The defeat leaves Liverpool on 49 points, with their grip on a top-four position increasingly under threat. With rivals still to play, the pressure continues to mount on their Champions League ambitions.
For Brighton, the victory represents their fourth win in five league matches, underlining a strong run of form at a crucial stage of the season.
The Seagulls move up to eighth place with 43 points, level with Everton, and remain firmly in contention for European qualification.
With performances like this, Brighton are not just competing, they are making a serious statement about their ability to challenge for continental football next season.
