The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on August 04, 2025, released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), announcing that 78.6% of the 1.6 million candidates achieved credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
The results, disclosed at a press briefing in Lagos, showed a 3% improvement over 2024’s 75.6%, attributed to enhanced teacher training and digital monitoring. However, 12% of candidates were withheld for malpractice, a slight decrease from 13% last year, with investigations ongoing.
Regional disparities emerged, with southern states like Lagos at 85% pass rates contrasting with northern states like Borno at 60%, reflecting educational inequalities amid insecurity. Parents and educators praised the progress, but critics argue the system still fails to address out-of-school children, estimated at 10 million.
The narrative of academic improvement is encouraging, yet it underscores persistent challenges in equity and integrity, shaping debates on Nigeria’s education future.
