The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival policy has not been scrapped, but rather upgraded to improve security and streamline entry procedures for foreign visitors.

Amid reports suggesting that the government had abolished the policy, the minister explained that the recent changes were aimed at enhancing border security and ensuring that only eligible travelers gain entry into the country.

He emphasized that the upgrade includes stricter vetting processes, biometric data collection, and improved coordination between immigration authorities and national security agencies. These measures, he said, are designed to curb illegal migration, prevent security threats, and facilitate genuine business and tourism travel.

Tunji-Ojo also noted that the government remains committed to fostering a business-friendly environment while balancing national security concerns. The clarification comes as Nigeria continues to position itself as a regional hub for investment and tourism, with policymakers seeking to make the visa process more efficient while addressing security risks.
