The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has directed the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels following heightened security concerns after a deadly attack in Plateau State.
The decision comes days after gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Angwan Rukuba, a community near the university in Jos North Local Government Area, killing at least 28 people and leaving several others injured.
Authorities say the incident has significantly raised tension in the area, prompting urgent safety measures to protect students and staff.
Following the attack, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew in the affected local government area to contain the situation.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the incident, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked,” while assuring residents of efforts to restore order.

In response, the university suspended ongoing academic activities, including examinations, and postponed scheduled events such as its 120th inaugural lecture and the induction ceremony for pharmacy students.

According to the university’s management, Vice-Chancellor Tanko Ishaya approved the evacuation following reports of escalating tension around areas close to the campus.
Students residing within Jos and nearby areas were scheduled for evacuation from Wednesday afternoon, while those travelling outside the state are to be moved beginning Thursday morning.
The state government is supporting the process by providing transportation, even within curfew hours, while security agencies have been deployed to safeguard university facilities.
Officials say the measure is temporary but necessary as authorities work to stabilise the security situation in the state.
