A swirl of intrigue enveloped Nigeria’s political scene on April 24, 2025, as unconfirmed reports surfaced of a clandestine meeting in London between President Bola Tinubu and suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, amid the fallout from a controversial state of emergency in Rivers.

The alleged rendezvous, was said to involve discussions on Fubara’s potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. Yet, no credible sources, have verified the meeting, casting doubt on its occurrence and fueling speculation about political maneuvering.

The context is electric: Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18, suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly for six months, citing political unrest. Fubara, a PDP governor, has faced pressure to align with Tinubu, with reports suggesting he rejected PDP governors’ efforts to challenge the emergency in court, signaling a possible shift toward the APC.

His absence from a recent PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan, alongside Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, deepened suspicions of negotiations with the ruling party.

Analysts view the rumor as part of a broader narrative of PDP defections, with governors like Umo Eno openly backing Tinubu. Fubara’s reported alignment with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressed in his Easter message, suggests political pragmatism, but a London summit lacks evidence. Rivers residents, weary of the crisis, yearn for clarity, while PDP loyalists fear further erosion of their party.
