Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the distribution of rice across Nigeria to support Muslim and Christian communities observing the fasting seasons of Ramadan and Lent.

The initiative, announced in a statement issued by the State House on Sunday, is aimed at providing relief to families during the religious periods, which are widely observed across the country and often place additional financial pressure on households.

According to the statement, the distribution programme reflects the values of compassion, charity and solidarity that define both Ramadan and Lent, two sacred seasons that encourage generosity, reflection and support for the less privileged.

The government explained that the intervention forms part of broader efforts by the administration to assist citizens during key religious and cultural moments while promoting unity across Nigeria’s diverse communities.

Under the directive, bags of rice will be distributed to households nationwide through a coordinated structure involving grassroots networks, ensuring that the food support reaches communities across the federation.

Distribution to be coordinated through grassroots networks

The State House said the exercise would be coordinated by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a support network aligned with the administration’s programmes.

According to the statement, the ambassadors will leverage their structures at the state, local government and ward levels to facilitate the distribution process and ensure that the rice reaches families in need during the fasting period.

“Under the directive, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors will deploy their grassroots network nationwide to coordinate the distribution through structures at the state, local government and ward levels, ensuring that families across the country benefit from the support during this season of fasting and reflection,” the statement said.

Government officials say the structure will help ensure that the distribution process is organised and that the intervention reaches a broad cross-section of Nigerians.

The initiative also mirrors a similar programme carried out during the 2025 Christmas celebrations, when rice was distributed nationwide to support families during the festive season.

According to the State House, the continuation of the programme demonstrates the administration’s commitment to assisting citizens during periods that hold religious and cultural significance.

Authorities believe the gesture will help ease the burden on families observing fasting traditions while also reinforcing the government’s message of national unity and collective support.

Uzodimma praises initiative as symbol of national unity

Reacting to the development, Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo State, praised the programme, describing it as a reflection of the president’s belief in strengthening national unity through acts of care and support for citizens.

According to the governor, the seasons of Ramadan and Lent are important moments in the religious calendar that emphasise sacrifice, generosity and compassion.

He said the government’s decision to distribute food support during this period aligns with the spirit of the fasting seasons and reinforces the message that Nigerians should support one another during challenging times.

Uzodimma also expressed confidence that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors network would ensure that the distribution reaches communities across the country, including rural areas that may require additional support.

Ramadan and Lent are among the most widely observed religious periods in Nigeria, a country with large Muslim and Christian populations.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset for about a month, while Lent is 40 days of fasting, prayer and reflection observed by many Christian denominations leading up to Easter.

Government officials say supporting citizens during these periods is consistent with the administration’s broader social support initiatives and reflects a commitment to inclusivity across religious lines.

The State House reiterated that the programme is intended to provide practical support to families while promoting the spirit of compassion and unity that defines both Ramadan and Lent across Nigeria.
