SDP Suspends National Chairman Gabam Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over allegations of financial misconduct and mismanagement of party funds. 

The decision, announced on June 24 by the SDP’s National Working Committee, follows an investigation into Gabam’s handling of N500 million in party finances, including donations for the 2023 election campaigns. The committee accused Gabam of diverting funds meant for grassroots mobilization, citing unauthorized withdrawals of N200 million between January and March 2024.

Gabam, who joined the SDP in 2022, denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated to undermine his leadership ahead of the 2027 elections. He claimed the funds were used for legitimate party activities, including rallies in 10 states. 

The suspension has deepened SDP’s internal crisis, with some members aligning with Gabam and others supporting his deputy, who has assumed interim leadership. The party, a growing opposition force, risks losing momentum after securing 2% of votes in the 2023 presidential election.

The SDP plans to hold an emergency congress in July 2025 to address the leadership vacuum and set a course for 2027, amid calls for transparency to restore public trust.
