Governor Sanwo-Olu has officially appointed the Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University. The announcement was made on Sunday by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Emmanuel Fanu.
This appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the institution, coming immediately after the tenure of Prof Gbolahan Elias (SAN), who served as the fifth Chancellor of the university.
Oba Ogunsanwo’s appointment follows the provisions of the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended), which empowers the Visitor of the university, the Governor of Lagos State, to appoint the Chancellor. In this case, the Visitor is Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who has been instrumental in overseeing strategic appointments within the state’s educational institutions.
The new Chancellor is expected to serve a five-year term beginning February 13, 2026, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term.

The role of Chancellor at LASU is largely ceremonial, yet it carries immense symbolic and practical significance. The Chancellor serves as the university’s figurehead, representing the institution in national and international forums, and is expected to provide guidance and support for the university’s strategic vision.
For students, faculty, and staff, the appointment is often a reflection of the university’s commitment to tradition, culture, and excellence.
Oba Ogunsanwo succeeds Prof Gbolahan Elias, whose tenure as Chancellor was widely regarded as meritorious and impactful. Under Elias’s leadership, LASU strengthened its academic programs, enhanced administrative processes, and cultivated a culture of excellence. The university’s management and council expressed gratitude to Elias for his dedication and contributions, noting that his tenure set a high benchmark for leadership and institutional stewardship.

In congratulating Oba Ogunsanwo, the LASU management and council expressed confidence that his tenure would further advance the university’s vision and mission. They highlighted the importance of having a Chancellor who embodies integrity, cultural grounding, and strategic insight to help guide the institution as it continues to grow academically and socially. Oba Ogunsanwo, known for his community leadership and commitment to social development, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the university, bridging traditional values with modern educational aspirations.
The university and state leadership remain committed to ensuring that this transition supports LASU’s trajectory of academic excellence, research innovation, and societal impact. With Oba Ogunsanwo at the helm, stakeholders are optimistic about the new era of leadership and the continued growth of one of Nigeria’s leading universities.
