Remo Stars have clinched their first-ever Nigeria Premier Football League title with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on Sunday, April 27, sealing the 2024/25 championship with three games to spare. With this achievement, Remo Stars also became the first Southwest club to win the Nigerian topflight title since Julius Berger’s triumph in 1991.
The match at the 5,000-capacity Remo Stars Stadium was a tense affair, with Niger Tornadoes’ resolute defense frustrating the home side for 83 minutes. But second-half substitute Olamilekan Adedayo became the hero, unleashing a thunderous strike from 20 yards to spark wild celebrations among the Ikenne faithful. The goal, described as a “wonder strike,” secured Remo’s 21st win of the season, lifting them to 68 points and an unassailable 10-point lead over second-placed Rivers United, who fell 2-0 to Kano Pillars on Friday.
Coach Daniel Ogunmodede, who led the Super Eagles B to CHAN qualification, hailed his team’s “relentless spirit,” while club owner Kunle Soname, celebrating his 59th birthday, called it “a dream come true.” Founded in 2010 by Soname, a billionaire, Remo Stars are the first privately owned club to win the NPFL since Udoji United in 1996. After finishing runners-up in 2023 and 2024, this triumph marks their steady rise in the league.
